Switching and how balance yourself

Kinesiologists work regularly with a state known as “switching”. A temporary neurological confusion where the body’s energy systems and brain communication become disorganised or reversed.

When someone is switched, the body is essentially “offline”. The natural flow between the left and right brain hemispheres, as well as the body's polarity (its energetic orientation), becomes disrupted. This can impact everything from clear thinking to emotional regulation and even physical coordination.

What is Switching?

Switching is a state where the brain and body are not communicating in their usual, integrated way. In simple terms, it’s like:

  • The wires are crossed

  • The body’s internal “yes/no” signals are reversed

  • The nervous system is scrambling instead of responding clearly

  • Brain hemispheres are not communicating effectively

  • Coordination and memory can be impacted

  • The stress response becomes dominant

This is why kinesiologists always check for switching before doing muscle testing; because the body may give inaccurate or opposite responses when switched. I always check for switching within myself prior to each client.

Why Do People Experience Switching?

Switching is more common than most people realise, and it can happen to anyone, especially in today’s fast-paced, overstimulating world. Some common causes include:

  • Stress or emotional overwhelm

  • Fatigue or burnout

  • Dehydration

  • Too much screen time or mental overload

  • Shock or sudden change

  • Energetic imbalances

  • Sensory overload (noise, crowds, busy environments)

From a nervous system perspective, switching often occurs when the body shifts into a fight-or-flight (stress) response, making it harder for the brain to function in a calm, coordinated way.

How to Recognise When You’re Switched

Many people are surprised to learn how often they experience mild switching throughout the day. Signs you may be switched include:

  • Feeling mentally foggy or scattered

  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

  • Clumsiness or poor coordination

  • Reading something multiple times without absorbing it

  • Saying the opposite of what you mean

  • Feeling emotionally reactive or overwhelmed

  • A sense of being “not quite in your body”

  • Muscle testing giving inconsistent or confusing results

For kinesiologists, a common way to identify switching is through the Sway Test. When switched, the body may respond in reverse. IE moving forward for something negative and backward for something positive.

Common Self-Switching Techniques

Kinesiologists manage switching by using quick, effective techniques to restore balance and communication within the body. These are easy to do yourself. I’ve outlined some key ones below so you can start checking and balancing any switching during your day.

Massaging Switching Points (Kidney 27)
Rubbing the points just under the collarbone, beside the sternum, helps correct reversed polarity.

KI27 with CV8 (Navel)
Holding or rubbing these points together helps re-establish energetic flow.

Upper Lip & Bottom Lip (Top/Bottom Switching)
Gently holding or rubbing these areas can correct vertical polarity imbalances.

Tailbone (Front/Back Switching)
Touching or arubbing the tailbone helps reset front-to-back orientation.

Cross Crawl
Walking in place while touching opposite hand to knee re-integrates left and right brain communication. Include a slight corss over of the midline.

Thymus Thump
Gently tapping the thymus (centre of the chest) boosts energy and supports the immune and nervous systems.

Emotional Stress Release (ESR)
Holding the forehead points helps bring blood flow back to the frontal lobe, calming emotional overwhelm.

Navel and Tailbone Press
Switching hand positions between the navel and switching points can help quickly reset the system.

Water & Sensory Integration
Drinking water and engaging the senses (like eating crunchy foods) helps the body reorient and ground.

By incorporating these simple techniques into daily life, one can move from a state of confusion and overwhelm back into clarity, balance, and flow.

When the body is “on-line,” everything feels easier: thinking is clearer, emotions are steadier, and the body can respond in a more aligned and supportive way.
