The Discomfort of Up-Levelling
Why growing into yourself can feel like losing everyone else first.
I was up on the range this morning, doing my usual walk, when this one came through loud and clear. It was the kind of thought that arrives so fully formed you know it isn't really yours, it's just moving through you. So I spoke it into my phone before I lost it, and I want to share it with you the way it came.
A woman I'll call Maria sat across from me recently, depleted, stuck, tangled in tension with her family and drifting from old friends, quietly asking herself the question I hear more than any other in clinic: what is wrong with me? She'd been doing the work. Setting boundaries. Speaking her truth. Dropping the people-pleasing she'd worn like a second skin for most of her life. And instead of feeling lighter, she felt raw. Uncomfortable. Alone.
So I asked her the thing I've learned to ask, after decades of sitting with people exactly here. This is the question I want to ask you too:
Is this discomfort you're sitting in perhaps directly related to your expansion?
You're Learning How to Be You
What I mean by that is simple, even if it doesn't feel simple. You are learning what it looks like, what it feels like, to be you, really you. And there's discomfort in that, because it's all new. You're making changes for yourself now, not for anyone else. You're dropping the people-pleasing. And that, too, brings its own ache.
But all of this growth, yes, it's discomfort, is ultimately for your benefit and in service of your higher purpose. It's not happening to you. It's happening for you.
Boundaries Are the Sound of Your Purpose Moving
You set the boundary with family/work/friends. You make the change. You speak the truth you've been swallowing. You do it because you're on the path toward your purpose, and that energy, the simple act of choosing yourself, creates change all on its own. It ripples out whether you intend it to or not.
Why Your Friends Suddenly “Don't Get It”
And with friends, they knew the old you. The old Jane. Because they're not moving through the same expansion, the same energetic shift, they don't get it (until they are ready to step into the growth). It isn't that they've failed you or you've failed them. You're simply operating at different levels of being now, and that's a normal part of this process, even though it doesn't feel normal while you're in it.
Because it's uncomfortable, we go looking for meaning. We try to understand it. And too often we understand it under the guise of what's wrong with me. There is nothing wrong with you. You are changing for the better, for you, and that means your relationships change too. That's not collateral damage. That's the process working.
Stop Understanding It. Start Feeling It.
Here's the part I most want you to hear: if you stop trying to understand this shift with your mind, and instead let it unfold energetically, tending to your emotions in a way that feels safe and supportive, rather than judging yourself for the discomfort and challenging emotions, the whole process becomes smoother, simpler, more in flow with who you actually are.
It's once the resistance in the mind quiets down that the doors that are currently out of view, start to open. New friends arrive for the ones who've fallen away. New opportunities show up in the space you have created. Your body starts to feel more alive, more energetic. And before you know it, life is moving along smoothly again, with you driving it, aligned to your purpose.
The Quiet Proof It's Already Happened
The shifts can be dramatic. But just as often, they're subtle, so subtle that you only notice them in reflection. You'll sit there one day and realise, wow, I haven't heard from that person in three months. I haven't missed them at all. And somewhere in that same stretch of time, without you quite tracking it, you've made new friends, found new ground, opened new doors. It's in that moment of quiet reflection that you realise the shift has already happened. You've already up-levelled. You just hadn't looked back yet to see it.
If you're in it right now, the discomfort, the distance, the not-quite-knowing who's still coming with you, I want you to hear this: you're not broken, and you're not doing it wrong. And you don’t have to do it alone.
You're expanding.
Let it be uncomfortable.
Let it be unfamiliar.
Let it unfold.
