Understanding Your Seven Chakras

A client once described her energy to me as "static on a radio that won't quite tune in." She couldn't pinpoint why she felt off, just that something wasn't landing right, like she was half a station away from herself. That's usually the moment I start talking about chakras, not as a mystical add-on, but as a genuinely useful map for figuring out where in the body a feeling actually lives.

Chakras are energy centres running roughly along the spine, from the base of you to the crown of your head. When they're flowing well, you generally feel clear, energised, and like yourself. When one's out of balance, you feel "off" in a way that's hard to explain to anyone who asks, and honestly, a little annoying to explain to yourself.

Here's a proper map, so next time you feel that static, you've got somewhere to start looking.

Root: Your Foundation

Sitting at the base of your spine, the Root Chakra is about feeling grounded and stable, safe in your body and in the world. Out of balance, it often shows up as exhaustion, that sense of expending huge amounts of energy and getting nowhere, or the classic "I can't finish a single task today" spiral.

To support it, get outside and breathe properly, deep into your belly, and imagine that breath flowing all the way down through your torso. A simple visualisation helps too: picture energy rising up from the earth, warming and steadying you from your feet upward, even if you're stuck at a desk or in traffic when you do it.

Sacral: How You Nurture

Sitting below your belly button, the Sacral Chakra governs creativity, relationships, and how you nurture yourself and others. When it's out of balance, you might feel unworthy, blocked creatively, or strangely disconnected from things you'd usually enjoy. This is often where old emotional patterns, especially from childhood, quietly live.

Balancing it looks like genuine self-care, not the productised kind, and leaning back into anything creative, even when you’re convinced you’re not creative. Gentle affirmations around worthiness and self-forgiveness help too, however cheesy they feel to say out loud the first few times.

Solar Plexus: Your Inner Drive

Between your navel and ribcage sits your personal power centre, linked to confidence, motivation, and that gut instinct you either trust or override. Out of balance, you'll notice uncertainty, or a stalled, stuck kind of momentum, like you know what you want but can't quite move toward it.

Small, achievable goals help rebuild trust here, alongside breathing right into your diaphragm while reminding yourself, even if it feels a bit much at first, that you're allowed to want what you want.

Heart: Connection And Compassion

Right in the centre of your chest, the Heart Chakra governs love, compassion, and self-acceptance, both towards others and, far more often overlooked, towards yourself. When it's drained, usually after energetically taxing interactions or long stretches of giving more than you've received, you feel disconnected, a bit numb to things that used to move you.

Rebuilding it is refreshingly simple: proper rest, a walk, a bath, and consciously making space for whatever brings you genuine joy, on purpose, not as an afterthought.

Throat: Speaking Your Truth

Your Throat Chakra supports honest communication and self-expression. Blocked, you might find yourself swallowing what you actually want to say, or constantly feeling misunderstood, like your words aren't landing the way you intended them.

This is one of my favourite ones to balance, because it's delightfully undignified. Sing the daggiest song you know, loudly, in the car. Hum or gargle. Scream into a pillow if you need to. Consciously relax your jaw and tongue, which sounds strange until you notice how much tension you're carrying there without realising.

Third Eye: Intuition And Insight

In the centre of your forehead, the Third Eye Chakra relates to intuition, insight, and creative clarity. When blocked, decision-making gets murky, and that quiet inner knowing you'd usually trust goes strangely silent.

Creative expression helps here, whatever form that takes for you, painting, writing, dancing, even redecorating a room. A few minutes of stillness, focusing your attention gently on the space between your eyebrows, works well too.

Crown: Your Wider Connection

At the very top of your head, the Crown Chakra is your connection to something bigger than the daily grind, however you define that for yourself. Balanced, there's clarity and a sense of alignment. Blocked, expect confusion, overthinking, and a persistent sense of being slightly untethered.

Meditation, gratitude, and time in nature all support this one beautifully, along with whatever spiritual practice genuinely feels like yours, rather than one that looks good on someone else.

Finding Your Dominant Chakra

Most of us lean on one chakra more heavily than the rest, often tied closely to our natural strengths or personality. A naturally driven person may run hot through the Solar Plexus. A deeply empathetic one often leans on the Heart. Neither is wrong, but your dominant chakra is usually the one worth checking in on most regularly, since it's doing the most work and is often the first to show signs of strain.

You don't need to memorise all seven or overhaul your life around them. Just notice, next time something feels like static or even a bit wonky, which part of you it seems to be coming from. That alone is usually enough to know where to start.

And if you'd like a hand working out where your own energy needs support, that's exactly the kind of tuning we do together in Chakra Balancing sessions at Zode Kinesiology.

If you want to learn more about the chakras, including the Earth Star and Soul Star Chakras, I have written a comprehensive 42 page Chakra Guide called The Body is Energy. Its available now at Zode’s Digital Deli.
